New Years Eve for me was HUGE!
I’d just spent 11 days on tour with BusAbout and New Years Eve in Prague was the big finale.
If you follow me, you know I’ve done a few tours, and generally don’t like that style of travel.
During the Festive Season though, I think it’s nice to relax and let someone else organise my itinerary; plus, it’s nice not to be alone this time of year.
Signing up for the Festive Trek with BusAbout meant I had 100 new expat friends to enjoy the “Silly Season” with.
So, the tour was great, I can get into more detail on that later. But for the final night in Prague (Czech Republic) 100 of us were dropped off by the BusAbout crew in a park around 8pm to drink (Botellon style) and get a good view of the fireworks and Charles Bridge.
I might have enjoyed the festivities a bit much because I don’t really remember the fireworks, but some say I was with them around midnight on the bridge.
Early on in the night, perhaps a little drunk, Ski-Lift Dave decided it would be a good idea to buy dodgy Czech fireworks at a local market and set them off in the park. But he set them off too close to our group and almost blew a few heads off when the rockets failed to fly (and exploded on the ground instead).
One of the young lads on tour slipped from a statue and cut his hand on broken glass; he ended up in the emergency room, but thankfully no other injuries in the night.
I ended up getting lost, drunk, and losing my tour group shortly after midnight; but met a lot of lovely Czechs. One guy, I think he was trying to rob a house, I caught him scaling a fence. Needless to stay, he didn’t stick around for a drunken chat.
I saw a lot of sights, and covered a lot of ground trying to find my hostel after the fireworks. Lots of locals helped me with bad directions too.
I caught 4 or 5 trams, saw a lot of fireworks before meeting one group of Czech girls who insisted I go with them to a rave at around 3am. I went (of course), but they didn’t tell me about the 45€ cover charge.
So, I left once I got inside to the register. Somehow I ended up at a Pizza joint, where the lovely staff sold me a pizza and helped me into a cab. I shared the pizza with the driver and was ecstatic when the cab only costed 105 CZK ($5).
Back at the hostel I joined the after party: drank 5€ cocktails, talked sh!t, played drunk pool, and witnessed a few cheeky hookups. Gotta love being on tour with Aussies and Kiwis: we know how to party.
I’m so grateful I made it back and had a great time. Going solo aint all that bad. But I’m a little disappointed in my new mates on tour who went to the 5 storey club (Karlovy Lazne) and didn’t invite me.
