One guys solo adventure around the world

Happy New Year everyone,

Yesterday I spent way too long on the computer, still researching my North African trip; partly because I know so little about it, partly because the media says its very dangerous at the moment, and party because I’m terrified about what could happen to me.

But, I’ve trolled the CouchSurfing forums, GlobeTrooper, LonelyPlanet’s ThornTree, and a bunch of other equally good sites, and people are doing it… casting their fears aside and exploring this beautiful world of ours.

I don’t know much, but I do know that it’s on my bucket list to see the Sahara, to trek around like a nomad. So I should just make it happen. But I’m letting that anxiety and fear grab me by the balls and squeeze. The result is I’m sitting in my box — my comfortable little box — and dreaming about the world outside. Gah! Like I was for the last 10 years before this epic solo trip.

Long-story-short, I’m going to buy a ferry ticket, see what happens when I leave the safety of the EU.

I’m also questioning whether to keep up the blogging. I get the feeling that not many people are reading, or if they are, they sure-as-sh!t aren’t engaging with me. Let’s start a community, and talk about stuff. I have a backlog of hundreds of stories to tell, but I’m not just going to piss into the wind, I need feedback.

I read a post today about how blogging changed this bloggers life, all I hear about from other bloggers is how many media trips they are getting, or how awesome their life is now they’ve all found each other on twitter. Well, I’m on twitter, and I still haven’t figured it out. I’m not looking for a free lunch, but an invite to the lunch would be awesome; I work hard, I can pay my own way.

Maybe I just need a mentor.

I definitely need a site upgrade, and to get all these ideas in my head down on the keyboard… but that takes time and money, I have one, but not the other. I’m meant to be travelling, outside in the sunshine, meeting new people… not hunched over trying to retell stories of my adventures — and building a life of interwebz success.

One of my resolutions this year is to just write freely, and honestly. Instead of drafting things down in a notebook, editing and re-editing, then writing a post. It takes way too long.

New Year, new me. I’m mixing things up. Spending even less time attempting to social network with other bloggers and media folk. It’s about adventure, that’s for sure. If anybodies out there, speak now… and I might keep on writing.

p.s. this is what it looks like when I spill out my thoughts onto the interwebz, unedited.

I’m still reading! Get out into the sunshine and don’t worry too much about the interwebby stuff, life can get pretty insular in there. I’m trying to write freely too, ironically, it’s harder than it looks haha. Keep travelling Ian! You are living the dream. :)

I’m going to write about food adventures one day… but on a backpacker budget (of course). Thanks for the support, I will be sure to try new and exciting things out once I get to Africa (if I get in, tomorrow).

Thanks Martin. So many stories to tell. A lot of them immature party stories. Trying to cut back on those though, with the new year, and just have alcohol-free adventures. BUT.. I still have a backlog of 10 months of stories to get out there. Thanks for “lurking”.

Sometimes I wonder if anyone reads my blog and I get all moppy and wonder why nobody loves me and then I remind myself that I’m doing this because I love it, not for anyone else. I love travelling, I love writing and I need to stop caring about what a million other travel bloggers are doing and why they’re getting fancy pancy invites to stuff and I’m not. I also have to keep at it. Travel blog networking is hard work. Blogging every week is hard work but one day something might come of it and it’ll be awesome and if not, well I’ve had a collection of amazing experiences regardless. Good luck in North Africa, you’ve got bigger balls than me!

Yeah, guess I was just frustrated that day. I think writing for myself, I could do in a journal… which I used to do, until it got stolen :( ..but thanks for the support Geri. North Africa has been “interesting” so far.

So I’m a little slow at the reading, maybe cause I’m so jealous;-) But I definitely enjoy reading what you are up to. Secondly you write so well so keep it up. There is also nothing wrong with un-edited free thought, most of the time it turns out as good and often better if your not concerned about correct grammar.

Africa is amazing so I thinks it’s fantastic that you grew some balls, bit the bullet however you want to look at it. So in short look forward to reading the next blog.

Yep. Enjoyed the hell outta Morocco, and Egypt is looking just as promising. Not doing all of Africa this trip though, doing the more “hardcore” countries (like the ones you went to) on a later trip.
